Cambridge Management Development, realising potential and driving business performance through effective management development programmes

Case Studies from Cambridge Management Development

Potential Realised...

We have compiled a number of case studies illustrating the change achieved by Cambridge Management Development through our business solution programme:

British Antarctic Survey LogoManaging Change

British Antarctic Survey, Cambridge

Cambridge Management Development worked closely with the Management Team of this major research institution to deliver a programme for the Senior Managers, which facilitated the introduction of major organisational change.

The Key to Success was the understanding of the change process and the attitudes of the managers to their roles and responsibilities in supporting the implementation of change.

A series of full day programmes was developed on behalf of BAS and delivered in half-day workshops where individual and organisational changes were considered using Kotter's model and the Transition Curve. This was followed by individual consultations with us to give managers the opportunity to review their own circumstances objectively and confidentially in a secure environment and to aid their future planning.

Gunnebo LogoManaging for Success

Gunnebo, Barcelona

A new International Team was facing up to the competition posed by China and the need for cost reductions. Cambridge Management Development facilitated a 2-day programme where ways of working effectively together were developed.

The Key to Success was to develop an increased awareness of management influencing and negotiating styles.

This was achieved using a variety of activities including a case study based on the current issues which opened up dialogue and resulted in clearly defined individual action plans and an overall strategy for tackling the management of the cost reduction process.

Warwick University LogoCoaching for Results

Warwick University, Warwickshire

Cambridge Management Development worked closely with the university to create an innovative programme aimed at introducing academics and managers to the practical skills of coaching.

The Key to Success was to pass on the skills to the participants to enable them to coach their own staff, following the programme.

The programme was based around the classic model of the coaching process GROW (Goal, Reality, Options, Will) and covered the key skills of Effective Questioning and Empathetic Listening within the framework of awareness and responsibility. The participants devoted time to repeated practice of coaching skills using their own issues. The coaching process was also used for action planning to deliver robust and realistic plans for each participant to use coaching confidently.

Red Gate Limited LogoAddressing Your Needs

Red Gate Limited, Cambridge

Challenges facing a rapidly growing software company in Cambridge were explored with the senior management team at Red Gate. The newly formed management team addressed current issues including: motivating new teams, coaching individuals and their teams, getting the very best from different personalities, performance management and the core skills of communication/listening and feedback.

Over eight half-day seminars and workshops (arranged to suit the participants' schedule), Cambridge Management Development presented and discussed the theories and models of current management practice and then led the team through a process of applying these to issues that had been identified at the initial consultation with each member of the team. The main benefit was that it gave time and space in a very busy work schedule for the team to express their ideas and share experiences. This highly focussed and successful group was able to challenge the theories but also put into context decisions which they were having to make about managing a small business as it grows into a medium sized business with a more diverse workforce and larger teams.

The Knowledge Transfer Partnership LogoAddressing Your Needs

The Knowledge Transfer Partnership, Belfast

'Who cares? Who can? Who will?'

Cambridge Management Development worked with the Knowledge Transfer Partnership as part of the 'Art of Leadership' conference for 200 graduates in Belfast. We delivered an interactive and highly practical session on Stakeholder analysis, which explored the development of the Stakeholder Influence Map, the Power/Interest Grid and the creation of the Attitude Support Matrix, before dealing with the practicalities of organisational politics amongst all this careful analysis.

The Key to Success was to relate this model to the participants' own experience in identifying who is a stakeholder and how to manage this portfolio of groups.

Cambridge Management Development can work with you to develop and deliver all or part of any programme tailored specifically to your needs and the needs of the audience.

Centre for High Performance Development (CHPD) LogoAssessing Potential and Planning for Development

Centre for High Performance Development (CHPD), London

Cambridge Management Development has worked closely with the Centre for High Performance Development to assess managerial performance objectively against CHPD's High performance Behaviours. These 12 behaviours have been used by a variety of blue chip companies including GSK, the Royal Bank of Scotland and Network Rail.

The Key to Success is the variety of tasks each participant undertakes, through in-baskets, group discussions and 1:1 feedback. Each then receives a detailed assessment of their performance and a development plan tailored to their individual needs. This includes a follow-up through on-going discussions, which include the participant's manager.

For many organisations, a key issue is the objective assessment of the quality and effectiveness of its managerial resource. Cambridge Management Development is able to offer valuable insights and practical experience in making that crucially important assessment. It can also assist your managers with implementing effective plans to realise their potential at both organisational and individual level.

Reflexions LogoThe Management Toolkit

Reflexions, Essex

Reflexions is a new publishing business created to exploit the growth in low cost flight destinations from Stansted airport. Cambridge Management Development was able to help the owner in the development of the strategy for the business and through the use of the emotional intelligence model as a framework, develop the owner's insight into the qualities necessary to run a successful business particularly through the initial set up and early growth phase.

The Key to Success is Cambridge Management Development introducing a new start up business entrepreneur to management tools such as 'Emotional Intelligence' which can help build self-awareness in deciding which activities can be done in-house and which should be outsourced. This is vital in predicting and managing the highs and lows of creating your business.
